COLLABORATION & STRATEGY
Mizzen collaborated with KEXP over 6 months to design and engineer a highly flexible, multi-purpose radio, broadcast, and live-event facility. which including plans to keep KEXP on-air 24/7 during the integration and transition. The 3-month integration phase was highlighted by the ongoing evolution of KEXP’s customized broadcasting workflows that integrated cutting-edge automation with manual inputs. A seamless transition plan kept KEXP successfully on-air 24/7 throughout the integration and into their first live broadcast from their new 28,000 sq. ft. facility.
KEXP boasts a state-of-the art, full AOIP multi-purpose radio & video production facility. Their facility includes two on-air studios, two large production studios capable of hosting multiple guests (with one serving double-duty as a mastering suite), four audio and video editing suites, a live video control room, and a live recording studio and audio control room with sound-proof viewing for 75 people. Audio is fully routable throughout the facility, allowing in-studio performances to be broadcast live through FM and HD radio while simultaneously streaming live video of the performance through KEXP’s online streaming service. The library/archive station provides KEXP’s team of 40 DJs – who combine to keep the station on-air 24/7 – with a space to preview music. A custom asset management solution affords DJs radio play-out flexibility while allowing them to use manual crossfade adjustments without automation assistance.
Technological and engineering support is provided by the University of Washington, which also uses the facility as a testing ground for their Computing and Communications department. KEXP averages over 75,000 unique website visitors and over 180,000 worldwide listeners weekly.
